...from uncovering London's Beautiful Boozers on two wheels

Cycling and pub crawling has always been our favourite kind of day out - nothing like earning your pint first. But finding the best pub? A right faff. Endless reviews, barely any interior photos (plenty of Sunday roasts though - priorities, eh?), and we were still left unsure whether the pub had the kind of vibe we were after.

Hello from Izzy & Jules

Hello from Izzy & Jules

For us, finding a Beautiful Boozer is like finding a soulmate. You get that instant connection which leaves you feeling right at home and you don't want to leave.

Hello from Izzy & Jules

For us, finding a Beautiful Boozer
is like finding a soulmate,
you get that instant connection
which leaves you feeling right at home
and you don't want to leave.

For us, finding a Beautiful Boozer is like finding a soulmate. You get that instant connection which leaves you feeling right at home and you don't want to leave.

Somewhere along the way - after a good few pints and plenty of cycling - we realised the pubs we loved most carried their stories in every detail. The history-soaked ones with Victorian, Edwardian or inter-war features still intact. The old school lot, proper carpets, memorabilia and all. And the timeless olde-worlde boozers. The most important thing they share? They stick to their heritage, resist modern trends, and aren't trying to be anything else. That's their beauty.

That realisation sparked a need for community building, and with it the hunt for a name that captured the character of the places we couldn’t stop returning to (and dragging our mates along to as well). One lazy Sunday in December 2017, it clicked: Beautiful Boozers was born.

We kept visiting Beautiful Boozers over the years, but it wasn’t until the pandemic hit that our fondness grew into something bigger. With so many under threat, we felt the pull to act - to celebrate the Beautiful Boozers that had stolen our hearts and to inspire others to do the same.

At first, we shared our finds on Instagram - mostly London haunts, then gems from further afield. The more we explored, the clearer it became... plenty of pubs were still doing it right - real character, real care - and they deserved to be shouted about. With rising costs piling on, it’s never been tougher for proper pubs to survive, especially the good old wet-led ones and rural gems.

So we started mapping every Beautiful Boozer we came across, always with the idea of an app in the back of our minds. For a while, the BB Map gave our growing community a way to discover Beautiful Boozers. But the mission goes further - you’ll find more in the "Not Just Any Pub, Not Just Any Mission".

...and here we are. What began as pure fun taught us something important - if we didn't take it further, we'd be ignoring the truth that those special social spaces sticking to their roots are disappearing or being stripped of their soul and character when modernised

It's a big project for a small team. Sometimes it feels overwhelming, but the dream keeps us going - having every Beautiful Boozer photographed with a thriving community behind them. Walt Disney said it best: "All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them." After almost two years building this app, we're creating something that grows and evolves with plenty of ideas still to come. Truth be told? We're just getting started.

Not Just Any Pub,
Not Just Any Mission

The Beautiful Boozers app isn’t just about singling out great pubs  - it’s about shining a light on their heritage, the very thing that made British pubs special in the first place. These aren’t just places to drink - they’re living museums and community hubs.

The sad truth? Too many of the UK’s 28,000 pubs (including London’s 3,500) have had their character stripped away. Original features ripped out, historic details painted over, cosy corners flattened into bland dining areas. What’s left often feels more like a café or a restaurant than a pub. Others have vanished completely, knocked down or converted into flats. When that happens, we don’t just lose a building - we lose centuries of history, we lose the spaces where we connect with each other, and we lose the places where strangers turn into friends, even if it’s only for one evening.

But the real beauties are still out there - waiting to be celebrated. We’re building a space to map and discover them together - to share finds, swap stories, and connect with others who care about  proper pubs. A place that sparks adventures, creates memories, and helps you make better choices. Because visiting pubs where heritage still lives matters more than ever.

And here’s the good news: every time you choose a Beautiful Boozer over a generic pub, you help to preserve its soul. Your custom matters. Your choice to seek them out over the ordinary is what keeps these pubs alive and their character intact.

Stick with us long enough and something shifts - once you’ve visited a few Beautiful Boozers and paid attention to their characteristics, you’ll start seeing the duds a mile off. After that, there’s no going back. To make it easier, we’ve rounded up the tell-tale signs that mark out a true Beautiful Boozer. Let’s break them down…
